Paramedical Science - A Parallel Medical Science

Paramedics can be defined as a practice in the field of medical science that deals with pre-hospital emergency services. A person working in this field is referred to as a paramedic. They work as an emergency medical care provider, who provides primary medical and trauma care. To become a successful paramedic, a person should have the ability to work in rotational shifts and should have presence of mind to take the right decision during an emergency. The major areas of work in the field of paramedical sciences are spinal injury management, fracture management, obstetrics, management of burns and assessment, and evaluation of general incident scene. A person working in the field of Para - Medicine must be well acquainted with the medical equipment maintenance procedures, radio operating procedures as well as emergency vehicle operation. The increasing demand of skilled paramedical professionals has opened up several career opportunities for young aspirants. Many paramedical institutes offer courses in the field of Para - Medicine, at degree and diploma levels.

Bachelor of Science in Medical Laboratory Technology

MEDICAL LABORATORY TECHNOLOGY

Preface: Medical Laboratory Technology helps to diagnose and prevent disease through clinical   laboratory tests. It is complementary to medical science. It involves analysis of body matter such as fluid, tissue, and blood. It also covers micro-organism screening, chemical analyses, and cell count.

Medical Technologists are an integral part of the medical profession. These professionals get involved in practical and technical work to aid correct diagnosis and effective functioning of Biochemical Laboratories.

With adequate knowledge and experience, Medical Laboratory Technologists having B.Sc MLT qualification can work in supervisory or management positions in laboratories and hospitals. They can also work as Laboratory Manager/Consultant/supervisor, health care Administrator, Hospital Outreach coordination, laboratory information system Analyst/Consultant, educational consultant/coordinator etc. Additional opportunities are available in molecular diagnostics, molecular biotechnology companies and in vitro fertilization laboratories as well as in research labs.

Programme: B.Sc. in Medical Laboratory Technology

Duration: Three years (Six semesters) full-time programme with 6 months internship in the last semester. 

Eligibility: +2 Science with Physics, Chemistry & Biology or equivalent degree

Examination: Examination rules will be as per guideline of CUTM Examination hand book.

Internship: A candidate will have to undergo internship for a period of six calendar months in a hospital/Diagnostics Centre equipped with modern pathology laboratory facility or in a fully equipped pathology laboratory, which fulfills the norms decided by the University.

Dissertation will be compulsory to all students. Students will carry out dissertation work individually or in the group of not more than three students. The format for dissertation/Internship report will be similar to the research thesis style; incorporating chapters on: Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results and Discussion and References / Bibliography. The dissertation will be submitted in a typewritten and bound form.   

Degree: On successful completion of three year programme, the candidate will be awarded with “Bachelor of Science in Medical Laboratory Technology (B.Sc.-MLT)” from Centurion University.

RADIOLOGY &IMAGING TECHNOLOGY

Preface: Bachelor of Science in Radiology and Imaging Technology is a three year graduate programme. Medical Radiography and Imaging is the health profession concerned with the direct administration of radiation, primarily x-rays, in disease diagnosis and injury assessment. Medical imaging studies have been a cornerstone in medical diagnosis for decades; however, technological advances and the addition of new imaging modalities now place medical imaging among the most dynamic, expanding and high demand fields in clinical medicine.

Medical Imaging clinical practice includes: general radiography such as orthopedics, pediatrics and mammography, vascular imaging, cardiac catheterization studies, computerized tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging. Medical imaging professionals are employed in medical centers, community and private hospitals, clinics, and physicians' offices.

Programme: B.Sc. in Radiology & Imaging Technology

Duration: Three years (Six semesters) full-time programme with 6 months internship in the last semester.

Eligibility: +2 Science with Physics, Chemistry & Biology or DRIT from any recognized.

Examination: Examination rules will be as per guideline of CUTM Examination hand book.

Internship: A candidate will have to undergo internship for a period of six calendar months in a hospital/Diagnostics Centre equipped with modern Radiology & Imaging laboratory facility or in a fully equipped, which fulfills the norms decided by the University.  

Degree: The degree of B.Sc. in Radiology & Imaging Technology (B.Sc.-RIT) course of the University shall be conferred on the candidates who have pursued the prescribed course of study for not less than three academic years and have passed examinations as prescribed under the relevant scheme and completed 6 months of compulsory internship in the last semester. 

On successful completion of three year programme, the candidate will be awarded with “Bachelor of Science in Radiology and imaging Laboratory Technology (B.Sc.-RIT)” from Centurion University.

MEDICAL LABORATORY TECHNOLOGY

Preface: Medical Laboratory Technology also called Clinical laboratory science is an allied health profession which is concerned with the diagnosis and prevention of disease through the use of clinical laboratory tests. These tests help doctors to detect, diagnose and treat diseases.

A Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT) also referred to as a medical technologist, a clinical scientist, or clinical laboratory technologist do these tests by analyzing body fluids, tissues, blood typing, microorganism screening, chemical analyses, cell counts of human body etc. They play an important role in collecting the information’s needed, sampling, testing, reporting and documentation of these investigations.

They determine the presence, extent or absence of disease and provide data needed to evaluate the effectiveness of treatment. M.Sc. Medical Laboratory Technology is a four semester program to impart in-depth knowledge of General and Clinical Biochemistry, Haematology, Clinical Pathology, Histo & Cytopathology, Immunology, Medical and Diagnositc Microbiology, Genetics & molecular cell biology and their applications in three semesters.

Fourth semester will be fully internship and research project leading to a dissertation. There is a great scope for the Medical Laboratory Technology students mainly include are: Diagnostics, Research & Development, Various Projects, Analysis & Testing, Various laboratories, Academics, and also opportunities in abroad. Most Medical Laboratory Scientists are generalists, skilled in all areas of the clinical laboratory.

However some are specialists, qualified by unique undergraduate education or additional training to perform more complex analyses than usual within a specific field. Specialties include clinical biochemistry, hematology, coagulation, microbiology, bacteriology, virology, parasitology, mycology, immunology, immunohematology (blood bank), histopathology cytopathology, genetics, cytogenetic.

Scope: After completion of the course one can opt for career in-

  • Research and development laboratories as a research scholar /Scientist
  • In various biotechnological industries as research assistant/Fellow

APPLIED AND CLINICAL MICROBIOLOGY

Preface: Medical microbiology is the branch of medical science concerned with the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases. In addition, this field of science studies various clinical applications of microbes for the improvement of health. There are four kinds of micro organisms that cause infectious disease: bacteria, fungi, parasites and viruses and one type of infectious protein called Prion.

A medical microbiologist studies the characteristics of pathogens, their modes of transmission, mechanism of infection and growth. Using this information, a treatment can be revised.

Medical microbiologist often serves as consultant of physician, providing identification of pathogen and suggesting treatment option.

Scope: M. Sc in Applied and Clinical Microbiology gives opportunity for specialized study in the field of medical & clinical microbiology. Candidates who successfully complete M. Sc in Applied and Clinical Microbiology course may obtain jobs as

  • Specialized technologist in Microbiology or supervisors of clinical laboratories in hospitals.
