B.Sc. in Optometry

Optometry is a healthcare profession concerned with the primary care of the eyes and related structures like spectacles and contact lenses, as well as various conditions of vision, visual systems, and vision information processing in humans. An optometrist also examines and screens for signs of disease that may need specialized medical and/or surgical attention of an ophthalmologist. At present ophthalmologists bear much of the burden of providing comprehensive eye care in India. The ophthalmologist to population ratio in urban India is approximately 1:25,000. However, in the rural areas of India, the ratio is close to 1:219,000. These numbers indicate the dire need of a large number of trained optometrists who can provide primary eye-care services, thus easing the pressure on the ophthalmologists. According to a research article published in Indian Journal of Opthalmology (2012), India has approximately 9000 four-year trained optometrists and 40,000 two-year trained eye care personnel. To provide comprehensive vision care to all the people of the country, 115,000 four-year trained optometrists are required.

The 4-year B.Sc. in Optometry course launched by the CUTM is an effort to develop a multipurpose ophthalmic manpower in the country and bridge this gap of human resource requirement in the health services sector in the country. B.Sc. Optometry course is designed to provide the students with all the theoretical and practical knowledge and skills needed to become a qualified optometrist who do much more than supply spectacles and contact lenses. An optometrist is trained to examine the eye for signs of diseases and advise further specialized action of an ophthalmologist. He may also offer specialist advice and treatment to patient having problems with low vision, binocular vision and those with specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia.
