construction management and project execution  

Objectives
The broad objective of this course is to mold the graduating civil engineers as professionals in the construction industry. Towards this end the following sub objectives are identified to be achieved during the period of offering the course.

   To bring awareness to the students regarding different equipment normally used in construction industry.
   To train the students with the process of maintaining various equipment used in construction industry and make studentsunderstandthe process of construction equipment scheduling.
   To make the student thoroughly knowledgeable on the various processes involved in materials management and the principles involved in the project cost management.
   To appraise the student of the various steps involved in the value engineering and its application in construction industry
   To train the students to become professional quality managers and thus be able to serve in the construction industry with awareness of the concept TQM having thorough knowledge of the quality standards in the construction industry
   To shape a construction manager with the hands on experience in execution of project taking proper care against the risk in the construction industry and apply the concept of safety process

Course outcome

At the end of the course the students will be able to:

   Identify the type of equipment required for execution of a construction project of any nature (highway project, building industry or power projects) and schedule the equipment usage and maintenance process of the equipment for project execution.
   Prepare an inventory of materials required in the construction industry.
   Arrive at the project cost and apply techniques of cost management to optimize the construction project execution.
   Carry out a given project involving the principles of TQM, risk mitigation and implementation of safety processes in the construction industry.

Registration

The course is limited to 30 students. Since the course being basically a self - learning one through presentations, case study based on the visits and report preparation, all aspects requiring rigorous input from the students side,  those who have more than 3 backlogs are not permitted to register for this course.

Assessment

Mode of assessment is 100% internal. The students will be divided into 6 batches with not more than 5 in each group. Each group has to carry out 3 projects 1 under each module. Further, they have to make 1 presentation in each module covering the entire syllabus. Each student has to select one topic during 1st and 2nd weeks of instructions by the mentor. The project should be on group basis with separate input based on which the project evaluation will be carried out. Finally the students have to submit a case study report on a hypothetical project, covering all aspects of the course. A comprehensive presentation shall have to be made on this hypothetical project.
