Centurion University’s Commitment to SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation
Centurion University is committed to ensuring safe and clean drinking water for all, in alignment with the Government of India’s policies. Through its CARES framework—Community Engagement, Academic Excellence, Research, Entrepreneurship, and Social Impact—the University implements sustainable water management and sanitation practices that contribute to Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6): Clean Water and Sanitation for All.
Community Engagement: Raising Awareness on Water Conservation
Centurion University’s Green Army plays a vital role in promoting water conservation practices within the community. This dedicated team engages in awareness campaigns that encourage local residents to adopt effective water-saving techniques, such as rainwater harvesting, drip irrigation, and wastewater recycling.
The M.S. Swaminathan School of Agriculture regularly conducts outreach programs and workshops aimed at farmers, focusing on sustainable agricultural practices that minimize water usage. These initiatives emphasize techniques like no-tillage agriculture and micro-irrigation systems, enabling communities to reduce water consumption while maintaining productivity.
Academics: Educating for Sustainable Water Use
Centurion University offers specialized courses in water quality management, soil conservation, and sustainable water use in agriculture. These programs equip students with advanced techniques for monitoring water pollution, implementing micro-irrigation systems, and promoting rainwater harvesting, preparing future professionals to tackle water scarcity and sanitation challenges.
In response to the increasing demand for water conservation, Centurion University has established a Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) on campus. This facility processes 282,000 liters of water daily, with treated water being utilized for gardening, farming, and other campus applications. Students actively participate in managing this system, gaining practical experience in wastewater treatment and its significance for sustainable water use.
Research: Innovating for Water Sustainability
Centurion University leads initiatives in wastewater treatment and recycling technologies. The focus is on upcycling wastewater from hostels, canteens, and other sources to minimize wastage and ensure efficient reuse. Research also includes evaluating advanced treatment methods to control pollutants that pose risks to water bodies.
Research efforts are directed toward developing water-efficient agricultural techniques, such as drought-resistant crop varieties and precision irrigation systems. These innovations help reduce the overall water footprint of agriculture while ensuring high crop yields, benefiting farmers and communities in water-scarce regions.
Entrepreneurship: Supporting Water-Related Startups
Centurion University fosters entrepreneurship in water management by supporting students and alumni in creating startups focused on innovative water-saving technologies. These include low-cost micro-irrigation systems, water recycling technologies, and biodegradable products aimed at reducing water pollution. Such ventures contribute to sustainable development and create economic opportunities for local communities.
The University promotes innovation in eco-friendly water infrastructure through its incubation programs. Student-led startups are developing solutions such as smart water meters, rainwater harvesting systems for urban areas, and eco-friendly irrigation solutions, all aimed at reducing water wastage and increasing access to clean water.
Social Impact: Transforming Water and Sanitation Practices
Centurion University’s commitment to water conservation extends beyond its campus through its “Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle” initiative. The University operates a zero-waste campus, ensuring that wastewater is fully treated and reused for gardening and landscaping. We adhere to India’s Solid Waste Management Rules 2016 and Hazardous Waste Management Rules 2019.
The University promotes hygiene and sanitation through its “Cleanliness is Godliness” campaign, which ensures the use of eco-friendly cleaning materials to minimize water waste. Our sanitation practices align with the “Swachh Bharat Abhiyan,” maintaining clean restrooms and employing minimal water for cleaning. The establishment of incinerators for sanitary pad disposal ensures compliance with the Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers Act, 2013.
Safeguarding Water and Promoting Sanitation
Through a holistic approach to water conservation and sanitation, Centurion University significantly contributes to SDG 6 by promoting sustainable water use, researching water-efficient technologies, and implementing impactful social initiatives. From the activities of our Green Army and community outreach programs to our state-of-the-art wastewater treatment plant, the University remains committed to ensuring clean water and sanitation for all. These efforts exemplify Centurion University’s dedication to protecting water resources and promoting sustainable practices.
