About the Programme
The Optometry program is designed to equip students with comprehensive skills and knowledge in eye health assessment, diagnosis, and management. This course trains students to conduct detailed eye examinations to identify and address refractive errors, prescribe corrective lenses, and recommend therapeutic eye exercises. In addition, students gain expertise in diagnosing ocular diseases and determining appropriate treatments or referrals for advanced care. They learn to manage eye diseases such as cataracts, glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneration, as well as ocular complications linked to systemic conditions like hypertension and diabetes. Through this training, students become integral to reducing the incidence of avoidable vision impairment by addressing uncorrected refractive errors—the primary cause of vision impairment worldwide.
Graduates from this program are prepared to work in collaboration with ophthalmologists and other healthcare professionals to provide co-management and referral services for complex cases. With an emphasis on primary eye care, graduates uphold a public health commitment to preventing blindness, promoting eye health, and enhancing visual function in diverse communities.
Duration
4-years program, followed by a 1-year internship in the final year, allowing students to gain hands-on experience in clinical settings.
