Centurion Approach to Education and Training
From the inception, Centurion University’s DNA has been “Shaping lives and empowering communities”. The University has focused on ‘hands-on’, ‘experience based’, ‘practice oriented’ learning that makes a difference through appropriate and relevant innovation and action research. While promoting Nano, Mini and Micro Enterprises, the University works toward learning experiences that are ‘quantifiable’, ‘sustainable’, ‘scalable’ and ‘replicable’.

The University has five campuses and a number of social entrepreneurial outreach wings that, along with collaborating institutions and networks, form its ecosystem. The campuses are located at Paralakhemundi, Bhubaneswar, Rayagada, Bolangir and Balasore which house a number of Schools. They are: M. S. Swaminathan School of Agriculture, School of Allied Health Sciences and Paramedics, School of Architecture and Planning, School of Basic Sciences, School of Engineering and Technology, School of Management, School of Media and Communication, School of Pharmacy and Life Sciences, School of Vocational Education and Training and the Institute of Knowledge Societies.

The University has dedicated centers for context specific applied and actionable research, besides undertaking training, consulting and teaching activities. They are:
The Institute of Knowledge Societies (IKS):
IKS was set up in 2014 with a view to develop it into Category II Institute of UNESCO. It is a research Institute whose focus is on the interface between traditional knowledge systems and modern technologies. This interdisciplinary Institute with a research and education focus has a new vision of liberal education that, when combined with Indian enterprise and technology, aims to shape a free society. IKS will focus, at the outset on education and research. It proposes to initiate some high-end courses in the areas of Media and Communications, which includes ICT. It will also explore all avenues of reducing the gap between classroom-based education and livelihoods and to that end, aims to set up demonstration laboratories to create the conditions for linking Education, Livelihood, and Community.
The Centurion University Centre for Renewable Energy and Environment (CUCREE):
CUCREE promotes development, acquisition and transfer of appropriate renewable energy systems, entrepreneurs and enterprises for the local area, including proof-of concept models. It works in partnership with Schneider Electric, Harsha Trust, SELCO, ADEME, IIT Mumbai and Green Sector Skill Council. To provide manpower for the last mile supply chain, the Centre undertook “Suryamitra Skill Development Programme”. It develops a network of quality instructors, trainers and maintains a database as a portal for matching the demand and supply of skilled work force in the state for exploiting solar energy.
Gram Tarang Foods (GTF):
GTF is a Social Entrepreneurship Outreach Entity of Centurion University dedicated to producing high quality extracts (select oils, oleoresins and total extracts) from raw organic spices, herbs, beans and flowers. GTF supports local value addition, local market creation and market linkages for farmers.
Centurion Science and Technology Entrepreneurship Facilitation Centre (UMBC):
UMBC A Section 8 Company, popularly known as Urban Micro-Business Centre (UMBC) is actively involved in institutionalizing the social disruptive innovation in Bhubaneswar slums. It has become a center for research and learning activities for students of management and engineering from India and abroad. Students and faculty from Centurion University, Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology University (RMIT) and University of Queensland, Australia, University of California, Santa Cruz, USA, Tata Institute of Social Science and other institutions have used the center for their learning and research.
The entrepreneurship development programme undertaken by the center has resulted in identifying and training 220 potential entrepreneurs from chronically poor families for undertaking nano businesses. Further, it supported 150 women with zero interest loans through established bank linkages.
One of the residents of the Kargil Slum, Ms. Meenakshi Chand, a representative of the socio-economic transformation process initiated by UMBC, presented her life’s journey at a global conference at Deakin University, Australia on 25th October 2016.
UMBC has received financial support from Government of India; Government of Odisha; Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation, Government of Australia, Odisha Milk Marketing Federation (OMFED), Mindtree Foundation, Bosch and Union Bank.
Gram Tarang Employability Training Services Pvt. Ltd. (GTET):
A social entrepreneurial initiative of the University, GTET is active in skill development and vocational education of youth and physically challenged persons, for employment and self-employment, primarily from disadvantaged areas of East & North East India. It brings in industry partnerships for joint skill programs and placements; undertakes Qualification Pack/ National Occupational Standard (NOS) alignment with Sector Skill Councils (SSCs); and implements programs through mobilization, centre setup, training, placement and post placement support. It mainly works in Automotive, Manufacturing, Civil construction, Mining, Electrical and Electronics, Apparel and Textiles, Retail and Hospitality, IT and ITeS industries. In 2015-16, GTET trained 20,189 youth all over the country and cumulatively has trained 100,000 youth with employment track record of 84%.
The Gram Tarang Inclusive Development Services Pvt. Ltd. (GTIDS):
GTIDS is a social entrepreneurial initiative of the University, active in Financial Inclusion space, i.e. implementation of Government of India’s Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY). It works in 14 states of India in over 26,000 villages as business correspondents for Technology Service Provider (TSP) GENPACT on behalf of 12 Banks as on September 2016. It has opened more than 14 million no-frills accounts through 7,000 Business Correspondents and 250 staff, and disbursed over 1,000 Crores MGNREGA & Social Security Pensions to agri-labourers, aged persons, widows, and physically challenged people. GTIDS has mobilized Fixed Deposits to the tune of Rs 2 billion, savings to the tune of Rs. 7 billion and collected over Rs 2 billion NPA’s from beneficiaries on behalf of Nationalized Banks. The organization has disbursed more than Rs 1.1 billion Micro-finance loans to over 80,000 beneficiaries under Mudra Scheme and has a mandate to disburse over Rs 3 billion in the financial year 2016-17.
Bapuji Rural Enlightenment and Development Society (BREDS):
BREDS is another Social Entrepreneurial Outreach of the university dedicated for the promotion of sustainable livelihood security of the underprivileged sections of society in North coastal Andhra Pradesh and South Odisha.
Centurion Institute for Training of Trainers (IToT):
Centurion University as the accredited Skill University operates Directorate General of Training (DGT) affiliated Institute for Training of Trainers (IToT) in Odisha. It is the only private IToT named as Centurion IToT, affiliated in the year 2016. Centurion IToT offers the 1 year CITS (Crafts Instructor Training Scheme) training in Mechanic Motor Vehicle (MMV), Electrician & Wireman, and Fitter trades.
Expected Outcome of CITS:
- Explain the elements and stages involved in managing a learning process.
- To equip Trainers with essential, industry relevant and latest knowledge and skills in their respective domains
- To enhance proficiency and skills of Trainers in translating curricula into training modules, session/ lesson plans and practical demonstration plans to ensure learning outcomes are met
- Develop and sequence engaging activities that ensure achievement of the learning objectives.
- Deliver interactive training content and facilitate active learning sessions by preparing and utilizing Information and Communication Technology (ICT) based audio-visual training aids.
- Upskill, monitor and mentor trainers over a period of time and ensure career progression through the Trainer Qualifications Framework developed by CUTM.
National Institute of Open schooling (NIOS):
National Institute of Open schooling (NIOS) caters to the education needs of marginalised segment of society who have been deprived education because of acute poverty or have been unable to access the formal education system. NIOS is different from the formal education system, where learners with different capabilities can choose the subjects they want to pursue as well as exam. For such learners, NIOS nurtures formal Secondary education courses, Senior Secondary education courses, vocational education courses and life enrichment programs through open learning system or distance mode. The pedagogy in NIOS is inclusive, sustainable, flexible and learner oriented. Study materials are available in English, Hindi and Odia (and other regional languages). NIOS provides elementary education for school drop outs and neo-literates, out of school learners through accredited agencies.
At a Senior Secondary level, streams like Arts, Science and commerce are available. NIOS provides only pre degree courses. NIOS provides a special platform for first generation leaners, physically, mentally, visually challenged learners and candidates from disadvantage sections of society. A learner can choose a maximum of 7 subjects and minimum 5 subjects. At the Secondary and Senior Secondary level, Credit transfer system is also available. On demand exam facility is also available. Once a learner is registered for NIOS, his/her registration is valid for 5 years. During these five years, learners are allowed as many as nine chances to appear in public examinations. NIOS Certificates are equal in value to that of State Boards, CBSE and ICSE.
Centurion University of Technology and Management (CUTM), Odisha was accredited by NIOS on 15th March 2013 for secondary and Senior secondary courses for the Bhubaneswar campus in the first instance. Later, we got accreditation for all campus of CUTM, Paralakhemundi, Rayagada and Balangir. Till date, CUTM has enrolled more than 6000 learners at Secondary and Sr. Secondary levels. On an average, more than 70% of students enrolled have graduated. At CUTM, we have integrated NIOS with the skill training which has led to higher wages and better work prospects for candidates.
The Center for Assessment and Certification:
The center undertakes assessment of skill courses and recognition of prior learning in Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Himachal Pradesh, West Bengal and other states. The Centre is recognized by the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE), Government of India. It works closely with a number of Sector Skill Councils such as Automotive, Telecom, Tourism & Hospitality, Furniture & Fittings, Electronics, Agriculture, Retailers Association, Plumbing and Health.
Last Mile Supply Company (LMSC):
LMSC promotes establishment of market-led supply chain in rural and urban area for key goods and services.
Ratnakar Bank (RB):
They provide credit and other financial services to micro-entrepreneurs.
Enterprise Development Institute (EDI):
EDI established in Paralakhemundi with equity support from Ministry of MSME, Government of India and Industries Department, Government of Odisha. The EDI’s objective is to alleviate poverty, enable youth, mostly the school and college dropouts, to have gainful employment and remain socially responsible.
Centurion Industrial Training Center (CITC):
A number of courses on vocational trades are imparted through the Centurion Industrial Training Center under Craftsmen Training Scheme (CTS). The CITC has operations in Odisha (Paralakhemundi, Rayagada, Bolangir, Gopalpur and Bhubaneswar) Telangana (Hyderabad), Andhra Pradesh (Vishkapatnam and Kinchili).
Centurion Public School (CPS):
Established in 2006, CPS is an effort to provide high quality basic education to children of Paralakhemundi. This is a need-based intervention as the primary education system in Paralakhemundi and adjoining villages is of poor quality.
