DEPARTMENT OF PLANT PATHOLOGY

The Department highlights on the study of plant pathogens and their interactions with plants-pests/pathogens leading to disease.  Pathogens including bacteria, fungi, nematodes, viruses, viroid and other microbe’s attack cause heavy economic loss. In this direction, the study of plant pathology and research findings in the field would be beneficial to the farmers in addressing major pest attacks on crops in the field. The Department under the School of Agriculture has initiated to mentor under-graduate students to study, understand and investigate various host-microbe interactions and towards establishing practices in addressing field problems. It also deals with various aspects of agriculture including microbiology, principles of plant pathology and pathogens, diseases of field crops, Horticultural crops and their management, mushroom cultivation etc. It is aimed towards training the students in various disciplines of agriculture and educate the under-graduate students in the field of plant pathology and microbiology. The faculty members in the department are well qualified and acquired the required skills to carry forward such responsibilities with high accuracy.

INFRASTRUCTURAL FACILITIES

The Department houses the laboratories of Plant Pathology, Microbiology and Mushroom cultivation units. An established laboratory with a floor space which can accommodate 35 students per batch with well-equipped like autoclave, laminar air flow, hot air oven, incubators, centrifuge, colony counter, microscope, colorimeter and PH meter. Various hands-on practical experiments EMB, mannitol, Macconkeys, screening isolation and identification of microorganisms on different culture media and maintenance of cultures are included in the syllabus and executed to train the under-graduate students.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDY

Most under-graduate students in plant pathology are supported by assistantships or fellowships from different sources. The students are encouraged for competitive examinations to procure fellowships for their studies and internships.

Multi-disciplinary subjects emphasized in the department of plant pathology include:

  • biology and management of diseases of bio energy crops, corn, fruit crops, soybean, vegetable crops, and wheat
  • breeding for disease resistance in corn, oats, soybean, and wheat
  • molecular biology of bacterial, fungal, nematode, and viral plant pathogens
  • molecular biology and physiology of host-pathogen interactions;
  • biology, ecology, epidemiology, and management of pathogens
  • plant disease diagnosis
  • extension and outreach to growers and the agricultural industry

RESEARCH

The Department focuses on imparting the knowledge of plant pathology and microorganisms, techniques for the diagnosis of plant diseases and methods for plant disease management and interactions between pathogens and plant hosts to the students of different cadre.
