Prof. Mukti Kanta Mishra

Prof. Mukti Kanta Mishra is one of India’s foremost education innovators and social entrepreneurs, widely recognised for pioneering a nationally and internationally cited model of skill-integrated higher education. As the President and Founder of Centurion University of Technology and Management, he has redefined the purpose of a university—positioning it not merely as a site of learning, but as a living ecosystem that integrates education, skills, industry, enterprise and on-Campus jobs through social enterprises, particularly for youth from India’s most disadvantaged and difficult geographies who live, learn and earn in an all-inclusive environment.

In 2005, well before skill development entered mainstream policy discourse, Prof. Mishra undertook what would become a defining intervention in Indian higher education. As Director of a consulting firm, he, along with three senior academics, assumed management of an AICTE-approved engineering college—the Jagannath Institute for Technology & Management (JITM), Paralakhemundi—located in a remote and socio-economically challenged district of Odisha. At the time, the institution faced declining enrolments, weak academic performance, and limited placement outcomes, with seven departments and an intake capacity of 420 seats. Prof. Mishra approached this challenge as a personal mission and social responsibility, initiating deep structural reforms across curriculum, pedagogy, industry engagement, and community integration.

This successful turnaround became the intellectual and operational foundation for the establishment of Centurion University of Technology and Management in 2010 – FIRST Private University of Odisha, enacted through a State Legislature Act.

Currently, Centurion University stands as India’s first private, multi-sector, multi-campus state university with a mandate for vocational education in its founding statute. The University operates primarily in tribal, rural, and aspirational districts and is globally acknowledged for its vertically integrated model that converges teaching, training, production, and employment. Its unique education model combines and delivers Traditional + Applied Action +Action Learning through blending and converging Teaching + Trading + Design + Project + Product + Productivity with Positivity for NSQF & NCrF Compliant Outcome & Impact Oriented Education and Productive Nation.

Under Prof. Mishra’s leadership, Centurion University has achieved a series of rare distinctions. It was the youngest university in India to receive Grade-A in the first cycle, and Grade A+ in the second cycle accreditation from NAAC, has been notified under Section 12(b) of the UGC, and enjoys degree-equivalence (Section-1 status) from the Government of Australia. The University has been designated a “Skill University” by the Government of Odisha, a “Centre of Excellence in Skill Development”  as well as “Assessing and Awarding Body” by the Government of India. Its skill-integrated education model has been extensively cited by NITI Aayog, the United Nations, the World Bank, UNESCO, and the British Council as a benchmark for inclusive and employment-linked education – the new-age teaching-learning model.

Complementing the University, Prof. Mishra founded Gram Tarang, a consortium of social enterprises and one of the earliest partners of the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC). Through Centurion University and Gram Tarang together, more than 850,000 youth, predominantly from SC/ST, BPL, and other marginalised communities, have received residential, employment-linked skill training across India. Several of Gram Tarang’s institutions have been ranked among the top ITIs in the country, and the organisation has been repeatedly recognised as a Best Performing Partner by NSDC.

Prof. Mishra brings to his academic leadership over two decades of senior corporate, international consulting, and academic experience. He has held leadership roles at Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (a Fortune 500 PSU), the Industrial Development Corporation of Odisha, and Kinhill Engineers, Melbourne. His professional responsibilities—spanning strategy, branding, quality systems, CSR, and industrial relations—have provided him with a rigorous analytical lens to address institutional challenges at scale and anticipate future societal needs.

An accomplished scholar, Prof. Mishra holds a PhD from Victoria University, Australia, where he received the Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Research, and has published extensively on governance, ethics, skill development, and higher education policy in leading national and international forums.

In recognition of his exceptional contributions to education, skill development, and social entrepreneurship—and for his pivotal role in fostering sustained India–Australia institutional partnerships—Deakin University, Australia, conferred upon Prof Mukti Kanta Mishra an Honorary Doctorate in 2024. This honour stands as a global acknowledgement of his visionary leadership and the transformative impact of the Centurion–Gram Tarang ecosystem.
