Advancing Sustainable Feed Practices to Protect Aquatic Ecosystems

On October 20, 2023, Centurion University’s School of Fisheries conducted a program focused on the preparation of alternative dried feed to reduce reliance on fish meal in animal feed production. The initiative was supported by two faculty members and 45 students at the Paralakhemundi campus in Odisha.

This program promotes sustainable and cost-effective practices in feed production, addressing the ecological and economic drawbacks associated with traditional fish meal use. By empowering participants with the skills and knowledge to produce alternative, sustainable animal feed, the initiative aims to minimize damage to aquatic ecosystems. Ultimately, it contributes to environmental conservation while enhancing the economic well-being of local farmers, aligning with the goal of protecting aquatic ecosystems through innovative practices in the marine industry.

Advancing Eco-Friendly Practices in the Marine Industry

Centurion University actively collaborates on research and initiatives that support sustainable practices within the marine industry to help minimize damage to aquatic ecosystems. Through its School of Fisheries and related departments, the University engages in projects aimed at reducing environmental impact in aquaculture.

One of the key projects involves the production of Black Soldier Fly (BSF) larvae as a sustainable, high-protein feed source. Developed at the Paralakhemundi Campus, BSF larvae provide an eco-friendly alternative to conventional fish feed, which often relies on over-harvested marine resources. This natural feed source supports various fish species, including ornamental fish, contributing to healthier fish stocks and reducing dependency on environmentally taxing feed sources.

By promoting such sustainable technologies, Centurion University aims to drive positive change in aquaculture practices, supporting industry efforts to conserve aquatic ecosystems.
