Centurion University Celebrating Mother Language Day

Centurion University celebrated International Mother Language Day on February 21, 2023, with a series of events aimed at promoting linguistic diversity and cultural heritage. This day, recognised globally to promote awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity, holds significant importance for the University, which is home to students from various linguistic backgrounds, particularly from rural and tribal areas of Odisha. The celebration was a vibrant reflection of the University’s commitment to preserving mother languages and fostering cultural pride.

The primary objective of the event was to promote the importance of preserving and respecting mother languages. By providing a platform for students to express themselves in their native languages, the University aimed to foster cultural awareness, inclusivity, and linguistic pride. Additionally, the event emphasised the role of language in shaping identity, communication, and learning.

Panel Discussion on Language Preservation: A panel discussion was organised on the topic of “The Importance of Preserving Mother Languages in the Era of Globalization.” Esteemed faculty members and language experts participated in the discussion, addressing the challenges that mother languages face in a globalized world, particularly the dominance of English. The panel highlighted the role of educational institutions in preserving regional and tribal languages and the need to integrate these languages into mainstream education.

Exhibition on Linguistic Heritage:  A special exhibition was organised showcasing the linguistic diversity of India, with a focus on the tribal languages of Odisha. The exhibition featured ancient scripts, traditional manuscripts, and information on endangered languages. Students were encouraged to explore the displays and learn about the rich linguistic history of their state and country.

Centurion University celebrating Yoga Day

Centurion University has been celebrating International Yoga Day since June 21, 2021, with great enthusiasm and participation from students, faculty, and staff. The celebration aimed to raise awareness about the benefits of yoga and promote physical, mental, and spiritual well-being among the University community. This year’s event highlighted the importance of integrating yoga into daily life for holistic health and mindfulness.

The main objective of the event was to promote the practice of yoga as a means to enhance physical and mental health, reduce stress, and foster a balanced lifestyle. Centurion University aimed to create awareness about the ancient Indian tradition of yoga and encourage its regular practice among the University community, especially in the context of today’s fast-paced and often stressful life.

A mass yoga session was conducted early in the morning on the University grounds, led by trained yoga instructors. Participants, including students, faculty, and staff, performed various yoga asanas (postures) and breathing exercises (pranayama). The session began with a warm-up routine, followed by beginner and intermediate-level postures such as Tadasana (Mountain Pose), Vrikshasana (Tree Pose), and Surya Namaskar (Sun Salutation). The yoga session concluded with guided meditation, helping participants achieve relaxation and mindfulness.

As part of the celebration, workshops on mental wellness were held, focusing on the connection between yoga, mindfulness, and mental health. Experts discussed the role of yoga in managing stress, anxiety, and depression, and highlighted its benefits in improving focus, emotional resilience, and self-awareness. Participants were introduced to simple meditation and relaxation techniques that can be incorporated into their daily lives.

A group of students from the University’s yoga club performed advanced yoga postures, demonstrating their skills and dedication to the practice. The demonstration included challenging asanas such as Bakasana (Crow Pose), Chakrasana (Wheel Pose), and Sirsasana (Headstand). The student-led demonstration aimed to inspire others to pursue yoga as a regular practice for physical fitness and mental clarity.

A panel discussion was held on “The Science Behind Yoga and Its Modern-Day Relevance,” featuring faculty members from the Department of Physical Education and guest speakers who are renowned yoga practitioners. The panel explored the scientific aspects of yoga, including its impact on the nervous system, cardiovascular health, and brain function. The discussion also touched upon how yoga can complement modern medicine and therapy in addressing various health issues.

Deep Mahotsav

At Centurion University’s Paralakhemundi campus, the annual celebration of Deep Mahotsava, or the Festival of Lights, holds a profound place in both the spiritual and cultural life of the community. Observed during the sacred Kartik Maas (month) of the Hindu calendar, this festival honours Lord Vishnu, particularly in his form as Lord Krishna, and his divine connection with Radha and the Gopis.

For the past 20 years, the temple on campus has been a focal point for this cherished tradition. Supported by Centurion University, the festival not only strengthens the university’s cultural heritage but also serves as an inspiration for unity among students, faculty, and community members alike.

As part of the celebration, many observe the Kartika Vratham—a period of fasting and dedication to spiritual purity. The temple is filled with prayers, bhajans, and rituals dedicated to Lord Vishnu and Lord Krishna, fostering an atmosphere of enlightenment and devotion. By supporting Deep Mahotsava, Centurion University plays a key role in nurturing the cultural and spiritual well-being of its community, strengthening ties and creating a shared experience of peace, gratitude, and unity
