Research & Development Focus

• Cosmetic Development: Specializing in the end-to-end creation of personal care products, from identifying bio-active raw materials to developing stable emulsions, gels, and balms. Research focuses on “clean beauty,” sustainable ingredients, and dermaceuticals that offer therapeutic skin benefits.
• Formulation Design: Utilizing scientific principles like rheology and emulsification to design effective delivery systems. The center emphasizes “Quality by Design” (QbD) to ensure product performance, stability, and consumer safety.
• Quality Control (QC): Implementing stringent analytical characterization with high-end equipment like HPLC, ATR-FTIR, UV-Visible Spectroscopy and testing protocols, including pH measurement, viscosity analysis, and stability testing, to meet global regulatory standards.

Skill Courses

The center offers specialized training programs designed to equip students and industry professionals with market-ready expertise:

• Drug Design Using BIOVIA Discovery Studio: Comprehensive hands-on course in BIOVIA Discovery Studio and BIOVIA Formulation Design. Participants learn to use AI-driven tools for molecular modeling, ligand-protein docking, and optimizing complex ingredient recipes.
• Techniques in Pharmaceutical Microbiology: Advanced training in microbial contamination risks, preservation strategies, and safety assessments essential for product shelf-life and consumer protection.
• Pharmaceutical Dosages Form Design: Skill-building in in-silico methods, including Quality by Design (QbD), and virtual screening, to accelerate the R&D timeline.

Research Facility

The centre for drug design hosts an integrated research ecosystem that bridges advanced computation with industrial-scale formulation and biological validation. Our facility is divided into specialized units to ensure precision at every stage of the R&D lifecycle:

1. Tablet Manufacturing & Solid Dosage Facility:

The Centre for Drug Design features a sophisticated Tablet Manufacturing & Solid Dosage Facility, designed to bridge the gap between theoretical formulation and industrial-scale production. This pilot-scale unit is fully equipped to handle the end-to-end development, processing, and stringent quality assessment of solid oral dosage forms.

Manufacturing & Processing Unit

Our facility allows for the seamless transition from raw powders to finished therapeutic units:

• Ball Mill / Planetary Ball Mill: A high-energy grinding unit used for size reduction and micronization. It is essential for increasing the surface area of active ingredients, which directly enhances the dissolution rate and bioavailability of poorly soluble drugs.
• Double-Cone Blender: A versatile, low-shear mixing instrument designed for the efficient homogenization of free-flowing powders and granules. Its unique geometry ensures a uniform distribution of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) within excipient matrices, preventing de-mixing and ensuring batch-to-batch consistency.
• Tray Dryer: Utilized for controlled moisture removal and uniform drying of granules, ensuring optimal flow properties and preventing degradation of heat-sensitive actives.
• Tablet Compression Machine: A high-precision industrial-grade press capable of producing various tablet shapes and sizes with consistent weight and thickness, mimicking large-scale manufacturing conditions.

Rigorous Quality Control & Evaluation 

To ensure every batch meets international pharmacopoeial standards, the facility is integrated with advanced testing instrumentation:

• Dissolution Test Apparatus: Essential for studying the release profile of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), ensuring the drug is bioavailable and effective within the body.
• Disintegration Test Apparatus: Used to measure the time required for a tablet to break down under physiological conditions, a critical parameter for rapid-release formulations.
• Friability Test Apparatus: Evaluates the physical durability and mechanical strength of tablets to ensure they withstand the rigors of packaging, shipping, and handling without chipping or crumbling.
• UV-Visible Spectrophotometer: A cornerstone of our analytical suite, used for high-precision quantification of drug content, purity testing, and concentration analysis during dissolution studies

2. Nanotechnology & Advanced Drug Delivery Facility:

The research center features a cutting-edge Nanotechnology & Advanced Drug Delivery Facility, specifically engineered for the development and stabilization of nanoparticles and nanovesicles (such as liposomes, niosomes, and nanoemulsions). This lab focuses on precision engineering at the molecular level to enhance drug solubility and targeted delivery.

Nanofabrication & Processing Suite

Our facility is equipped with high-precision instruments to achieve consistent particle size and morphology:

• High-speed Homogenizer: Utilized for intense emulsification and particle size reduction, ensuring the creation of uniform, stable nano-emulsions and vesicular systems.
• Rota Evaporator: A critical tool for the efficient and gentle removal of solvents under vacuum, essential for the thin-film hydration method used in liposome and nanovesicle preparation.
• Spray Dryer: Enables the transformation of liquid nano-dispersions into free-flowing, stable dry powders, ideal for inhalation or solid dosage applications.

Separation & Stability Engineering

To ensure the integrity and long-term viability of nano-formulations, the center utilizes advanced preservation and recovery technologies:

• Cooling Centrifuge: Allows for the high-speed separation and purification of nanoparticles from the bulk medium while maintaining a strictly controlled temperature to prevent the degradation of heat-sensitive bio-actives.
• Lyophilizer (Freeze Dryer): A sophisticated sublimation unit used to remove moisture from delicate nano-constructs, significantly extending shelf-life and maintaining the structural integrity of vesicles.
• Stability Chamber: Provides a controlled environment (temperature and humidity) to conduct accelerated and long-term stability studies, ensuring the nano-products remain effective and safe throughout their lifecycle.

3. Animal Cell Culture Facility

The sophisticated Animal Cell Culture Facility, a specialized biosafety environment designed for the modern evaluation of drug efficacy, toxicity, and cellular interactions. This facility allows researchers to transition from chemical formulation to biological validation using standardized in vitro models.

Cellular Growth & Maintenance Suite

Our laboratory provides a strictly controlled, sterile atmosphere to ensure the viability and genetic stability of diverse cell lines:

• CO2 Incubator: A high-precision environment that maintains optimal physiological conditions (temperature, humidity, and CO2 levels) to mimic the internal human environment for consistent cell growth.
• Type 2 Bio-Safety Cabinet (BSC): Engineered to provide a sterile working zone, protecting both the biological samples from contamination and the researcher from exposure to hazardous agents through advanced HEPA filtration.

Advanced Observation & Analysis

To monitor cellular health and quantify therapeutic responses, the facility integrates high-resolution imaging and detection tools:

• Inverted Microscope: Specifically designed for the visual inspection of living cell cultures in flasks and multi-well plates, allowing for the real-time monitoring of cell morphology, confluency, and phenotypic changes.
• ELISA Plate Reader: A high-throughput microplate reader used for quantifying biological assays, including cytokine release, protein expression, and cell viability (MTT assays), providing the data needed to determine drug potency and safety.

4. Advanced Pharmaceutical Analysis Facility

Advanced Pharmaceutical Analysis Facility, a centralized laboratory engineered for the rigorous characterization and validation of complex drug delivery systems and cosmetic formulations. This facility serves as the critical backbone for ensuring that every developed product meets international pharmacopoeial and safety standards.

Precision Analytical Suite

Our laboratory is equipped with high-sensitivity instrumentation to identify, quantify, and verify molecular structures:

• Ultra-Fast Liquid Chromatography (UFLC): Providing rapid and high-resolution separation of multi-component mixtures, this system is essential for assaying active ingredients, monitoring degradation products, and conducting impurity profiling.
• ATR-FTIR (Attenuated Total Reflection – Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy): A non-destructive tool for the structural fingerprinting of raw materials and finished products, used extensively to confirm molecular identity and detect potential ingredient-excipient interactions.
• UV-Visible Spectrophotometer: Utilized for precise quantitative analysis, concentration determination, and routine purity checks across a wide range of pharmaceutical and cosmetic actives.

Performance & Physicochemical Testing

To guarantee the functional efficacy of various dosage forms, the facility integrates specialized physical testing units:

• Dissolution & Disintegration Test Apparatus: Standardized systems to evaluate the release kinetics and breakdown of solid oral dosages, ensuring optimal bioavailability and therapeutic performance.
• Brookfield Viscometer: A critical instrument for the rheological characterization of semi-solids and liquids, ensuring the perfect texture, spreadability, and flow properties for creams, gels, and syrups.
• Cooling Centrifuge: Facilitates the separation of temperature-sensitive nanostructures and particulates from complex matrices without compromising their physical or chemical stability.

Stability & Incubation Services

The facility is designed to simulate real-world and accelerated environmental conditions to predict product shelf-life:

• Stability Chamber: A controlled environment (temperature and humidity) used for long-term and stress-testing protocols to ensure product integrity over time.
• Shaker Bath Incubator: Enables the study of drug release and microbial growth under precisely regulated thermal and mechanical agitation, mimicking physiological conditions.

5. Animal House Facility

Centre for Drug Design includes a modern Animal House Facility, strictly maintained to conduct in vivo pharmacological screenings and safety evaluations. This facility provides the essential biological context needed to validate the therapeutic potential of new drug designs and cosmetic formulations before clinical consideration.

Specialised Pharmacological Screening

The facility is equipped with precision instruments to study inflammatory responses and respiratory drug efficacy:

• Histamine Chamber: A specialized aerosol exposure unit used to induce experimental bronchoconstriction. This is critical for evaluating the anti-asthmaticand anti-allergic properties of new formulations, allowing researchers to monitor protective effects against respiratory challenges.
• Plethysmometer (Plethysmograph): A high-accuracy micro-controlled device used to measure changes in paw volume. It is the gold standard for assessing anti-inflammatoryactivity, enabling the quantitative tracking of edema reduction over time in various animal models.

Ethical & Controlled Environment

• Standardised Housing: Designed to meet CPCSEA and international ethical guidelines, ensuring optimal temperature, ventilation, and lighting for animal well-being.

Pre-clinical Validation: This unit bridges the gap between cell culture studies and human application, providing vital data on systemic absorption, dosage efficacy, and behavioral responses.

Details: Two-day Hands-on Training on Advanced Analytical Instrumentation and Analysis was successfully held 21st & 22nd March 2025 at Centurion University of Technology and Management (CUTM). Coordinated by Mrs Rupali Rupasmita Rout & Mrs. Monalisa Mahapatra, Assistant Professor, SoPLS, CUTM.

Objective:

The program aimed to provide participants with advanced knowledge and practical skills in analytical instrumentation, focusing on HPLC, UV spectroscopy, and dissolution testing.

Details: The Summer Internship (Phase-I) 2025 at the Centre for Drug Design commenced with a successful and vibrant inauguration ceremony on May 19, 2025. The program is being conducted in collaboration with the School of Pharmacy and Life Sciences (SoPLS) and the Department of Botany, under the aegis of the School of Applied Sciences (SoAS).This year, the internship is hosting 26 bright and enthusiastic interns from a range of prestigious institutions, including:

Details Five-days Hands-on Training on Basic Cell Culture Techniques

was successfully held from 17^th to 21st March 2026 at Centurion University of Technology and Management (CUTM). Co-ordinated by Dr. Monalisa Mahapatra, Assistant Professor, SoPLS, CUTM and Dr. Bikash Ranjan Sahu, Associate Professor, SoAS, CUTM.

Objective:

To impart fundamental theoretical knowledge and hands-on training in basic cell culture techniques with emphasis on aseptic practices and laboratory safety.

The five-day hands-on training program on Basic Cell Culture Techniques was inaugurated in the presence of the esteemed trainers, who addressed the participants and highlighted the significance of cell culture methodologies in contemporary biomedical and pharmaceutical research. The inaugural session emphasized the importance of aseptic practices, experimental precision, and translational relevance of in vitro models, setting a strong foundation for the intensive practical sessions conducted throughout the training program.
