Pedestrian Priority on Campus & Local Authority Collaboration in Replanning, Re-Development
The University promotes the use of electric vehicles (e-vehicles) and pedestrian pathways to reduce carbon emissions. E-vehicles produce zero tailpipe emissions, contributing to cleaner air and a healthier environment. This initiative supports the fight against climate change and improves respiratory health. Beautiful pedestrian pathways connect various parts of the campus, encouraging walking and cycling. Restricting vehicle entry and promoting bicycle use further embody the University’s dedication to reducing its environmental footprint and fostering a greener, healthier campus community. This initiative embodies our dedication to reducing our environmental footprint and fostering a greener, healthier, and more vibrant campus community. The University uses ten e-vehicles for transportation purposes within the campus.

Like many educational institutions, the University initially faced challenges such as vehicular congestion, pedestrian safety concerns, and limited open spaces. Recognising these issues, the University embraced pedestrian priority as a core element of its campus design and management strategy.
The University undertook a comprehensive campus redesign in 2019 focused on creating spacious, well-lit walkways, pedestrian plazas, and green spaces. This initiative aimed to foster walking and social interaction while enhancing the campus’s aesthetic appeal.
The University implemented various traffic management strategies including designated drop-off zones, reduced speed limits, and traffic calming measures to minimise vehicular traffic within the campus, prioritising pedestrian safety and convenience.
The University invested in pedestrian infrastructure such as bridges, elevated walkways, and accessible ramps to improve connectivity and ensure barrier-free access for all, including individuals with disabilities.
Outcomes:
- Improved Safety: The emphasis on pedestrian access significantly enhanced safety on campus, leading to a noticeable reduction in accidents and injuries among students, faculty, and staff.
- Enhanced Mobility: Pedestrian priority measures facilitated seamless movement across campus, promoting walking as a preferred mode of transport between buildings and amenities.
- Promotion of Active Lifestyle: By prioritising pedestrian access, the University encouraged an active and healthy lifestyle among its community members, turning walking into an opportunity for exercise, stress relief, and social interaction.
- The University’s initiative to prioritise pedestrian access has not only transformed its campus environment but also set a benchmark for creating safer, more accessible educational spaces. This case study highlights the importance of pedestrian-friendly design in promoting sustainability, wellness, and community engagement within higher education institutions.
