Chalk Production Unit

Genesis

In May 2021, the Chalk Production Unit was started as a university requirement. The unit was established with the aim of reducing the usage of chemicals and replacing markers with a more eco-friendly alternative. The dustless chalk was introduced as a replacement for markers, which had been causing respiratory problems for both students and faculty.

The Chalk Production Unit is a part of the Waste to Wealth-Lab, also known as the Creative Lab. The lab’s objective is to turn waste materials into useful products, which will contribute to creating a more sustainable environment. By replacing markers with dustless chalk, the Chalk Production Unit has achieved this objective while simultaneously improving the respiratory health of students and faculty.

Aims and Objectives

The Chalk Production Unit is a commendable initiative that has achieved its objectives of reducing respiratory health hazards and contributing towards a sustainable environment. The production of dustless chalk has been a positive step towards replacing chemicals and markers with a healthier alternative. The future goals of the unit are ambitious and will help in making it more productive and efficient. The Chalk Production Unit aligns with several SDGs, and its contribution towards creating a better and sustainable world is invaluable.

Products/ Services Available

The Chalk Production Unit produces dustless chalk, which is a more eco-friendly and healthier alternative to markers. The dustless chalk is currently available in white, but experiments are underway to produce coloured chalk. Once the experiments are successful, the coloured chalks will also be available for sale. The dustless chalk produced by the Chalk Production Unit is not only being sold to other schools but is also being used within the university.

Benefits

The primary benefit of using dustless chalk is reduced respiratory health hazards. The traditional chalk used in classrooms produced a considerable amount of dust when used, which can cause respiratory problems. In contrast, dustless chalk produces minimal dust, making it safer and healthier for students and faculty. The Chalk Production Unit has succeeded in reducing respiratory health hazards while simultaneously contributing towards a more sustainable environment.

Future goals

The Chalk Production Unit has ambitious future goals. All manual machines will be replaced with automatic ones, which will improve the production capacity and the quality of the chalk produced. The unit is also working on producing coloured chalks, which will increase the product range and attract a wider customer base. By achieving these goals, the Chalk Production Unit will become more efficient and productive while continuing to contribute towards a sustainable environment.

Adherence to SDGs

The Chalk Production Unit aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The unit contributes towards SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) by reducing respiratory health hazards among students and faculty. It also aligns with SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) by using waste materials to produce useful products. Additionally, the unit’s future goal of using automatic machines aligns with SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure) by improving production capacity and efficiency.
