Staff Hunger and Intervention
Centurion University is committed to addressing hunger and ensuring food security not only for its students but also for its staff members. Recognising that hunger and food insecurity can affect staff well-being and performance, the University has implemented targeted interventions to support its employees, especially those from low-income households.
Support for Staff from Low-Income Backgrounds
The University provides financial assistance to staff members who may struggle with food insecurity due to low income. Through various subsidy programs, Centurion University offers discounted meals at the campus mess, dining halls, and food outlets to ensure that all staff have access to healthy and affordable meals. In addition to subsidies, the University runs food assistance programs for staff who may face temporary financial hardship, ensuring they do not experience food shortages during difficult times.
Nutritional Planning and Subsidised Outlets for Staff
Nutritional Planning
Much like the student body, staff members benefit from a balanced and nutritious diet planned in accordance with guidelines from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). These meal plans are tailored to the caloric needs of the staff, ensuring adequate energy and nutrition for daily tasks. This includes providing a variety of fresh vegetables, legumes, dairy, and protein sources in daily meals while limiting processed foods and those high in saturated fats, sugar, and salt.
Staff Cafeteria and Food Outlets
Centurion University has several food outlets, including staff-specific dining options, where employees can access nutritious meals at affordable prices. These outlets offer both vegetarian and non-vegetarian options, including locally sourced and organic ingredients, where possible. The University also promotes sustainable food practices by encouraging staff to use reusable containers and minimise food waste.
Health and Wellness Initiatives
In addition to meal provisions, the University conducts regular health and wellness programs for staff, focusing on nutrition education and healthy eating habits. These initiatives aim to improve awareness about the importance of balanced diets and the benefits of locally grown, seasonal food.
Sustainable Food Practices
To align with its sustainability goals, Centurion University encourages its staff to participate in food sustainability efforts. The composting of food waste and the use of bio-digesters contribute to a circular economy, reducing waste and providing organic fertiliser for campus gardens. Surplus food is also donated to local communities or used to support animal husbandry programs, ensuring that resources are utilised efficiently.
